The Explanation
(for those who require one)
And, of course, that is what all of this is -- all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs -- that song, endlesly reincarnated -- born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 -- same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."

Absolutely Brilliant!
Holy shit!
Thank you, Rob, and thank you, Ray!
Glad ye liked it.
Great series, but where's Canada Lee and John Garfield?
I posted a photo of Garfield testifying before HUAC about 7-8 months ago (and more recently one of Adolphe Menjou). As for Canada Lee, I simply didn't have any images from his testimony. In fact, I'm not sure I've even seen one.
I love Jeff Corey's B&L Goggles - as if anyone could mistake his famous schnozz or distinctive voice. Always liked him.
I'm a little late to the party on this one, Tom, but yeah, "Holy Shit" pretty much says it.
I'm fascinated by the figures who were the central players in this thing, like the ones featured here, as well as people like Ring Lardner, Dalton Trumbo, Jules Dassin, etc. Thanks for posting this.
If you could email me at mattrosvally@gmail.com I'd love to ask about the use of some of these photos. Is there any help you could offer me in getting one or two of these photos in an independent movie?
